IPL Hair Removal - How it works!

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser hair removal and how does it work?

IPL systems all work on the principle of absorption of light energy into targeted areas in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy which causes damage to the specific target area. In the case of hair removal, pigment contained in the hair shaft is targeted. This energy heats up the base of the hair follicle, which causes damage to the cells that produce hair growth. If enough damage is done, this will prevent the hair from growing any further.

IPL is therefore most effective during, what is known as, the growth phase of hair growth. When new hairs start to grow, and during growth phase the hair follicle has increased pigmentation and growth of new cells that makes it more open to damage from light treatment.

Due to the way hair grows-and hair does not grow evenly, this also explains why Intense Pulsed Light hair removal is not a one-off treatment. Hair follicles that are in resting or shedding phase will not be extensively affected by the light energy causing the hair to continue its normal cycle.

We recommend a minimum course of 6 treatments to achieve results.

Who is not suitable for treatment with Laser or Intense Pulsed Light for Hair Removal?

The general rule is that the hair colour should be darker than the skin colour. Treatment is most effective when there is good contrast between the hair colour and skin colour – making black hair in pale skin the ideal combination to treat. Blonde, red or grey hair responds less well but an acceptable result may be achieved. This will be discussed at your consultation.

How can I be sure the treatment is safe and effective?

The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out clinical trials. We use the patch test as a guide to find the ideal setting so you get the most effective treatment. Clinical trials documenting the systems safety and effectiveness are carried out by extensive researchers preceding the release of the product. The results of these tests are then published in respected medical journals.

Photo Rejuvenation

Photo-rejuvenation is an exciting new procedure designed to produce younger and healthier looking skin. As most of us age, we begin to see small but visible signs of sun damage appearing in our complexion. This may include freckles, Rosacea, wrinkles, broken capillaries, dark spots, blotchy skin colour, redness of the face and neck, enlarged pore size and sun damage.

Photo rejuvenation, known as IPL treatment, is the only procedure that can treat vascular redness, pigmented brown spots, sun damage and the collagen structure all at the same time.

With the use of the new IPL technology, dramatic improvements can now be accomplished with little or no hiding away and with minimal discomfort.

Patients with minimal wrinkles, but blotchy uneven texture with facial blood vessels can expect great improvement. Those with severe wrinkles and scars will require a more assertive treatment program.

Will I have any discomfort?

Full face treatments may be a bit uncomfortable. No aesthetic/ needles are required.

How to prepare for treatment sessions:

A facial skin care program will be outlined for you that can be started before you commence your treatments and also be used as a maintenance program. The face should be clean and free of all make up. Emla can be applied to the planned treatment areas 30-60 minutes prior to your sessions. Avoid tanning before and after your “LIGHT FACIALS” as this will enhance blotching.

How often can the treatments be performed?

For most patients 3-5 treatment sessions spaced at 2-4 weeks apart create the best result. Looking after your face is like maintaining your teeth or your car. A repeat “Light Facial” may be required once a year plus your personal facial program reviewed for you.

Side Effects: What are the side effects?

The appearance of skin right after treatment is similar to what you will see after a good exercise workout. The flushing and redness will last from a few minutes to several hours after treatment. If your skin is quite loose, you may experience some swelling. Brown age spots and uneven pigmentation will turn slightly darker after treatment.
